Your personal choice of abortion may have affected you in ways you had not anticipated.
Some women feel relief after an abortion, while other women experience strong negative disturbances. Some of these reactions may be immediate. Some occur many years after the abortion.
Symptoms of post abortion grief may include:
- Emotional "numbing"
- Anniversary grief
- Nightmares or flashbacks of the abortion
- Increased risk of alcohol and drug abuse
- Relationship problems
- Suicidal thoughts
Post abortion grief can be related to a woman’s age, length of pregnancy, previous mental health, religious or cultural beliefs, or whether she was pressured into an abortion. Such complicated grief can be a barrier in coming to peace with self and others.
If you are experiencing one or more of these stressors, let’s begin by assuring you of this – you are not alone in what you are feeling, and healing is possible. It is normal to experience regret or sadness or conflicting emotions after a pregnancy loss. And abortion is a pregnancy loss.
